Objective: The purpose of this study was to discover the effect of fluoride for desensitization treatment.
Materials and Methods: We sectioned extracted 15 healthy human 1st and 2nd molar teeth into 6 pieces to make 90 specimens in total. The specimens are divided into 6 groups (15 specimens for each group). Group 1 is the control group with no treatment at all, Group 2 is treated with topical application of NaF solution, Group 3 with NaF iontophoresis, Group 4 with APF gel, Group 5 with neutral gel and Group 6 with fluoride varnish. After topical application, the surface of each group was observed with SEM and the obstruction level of the dentinal tubules was calculated.
Results: The obstruction level of Group 1 with no treatment is 1.89¡¾0.93, which is statistically valid enough to indicate that its obstruction level is lower than other groups which were treated with topical application of flour (p<0.05). The obstruction level of Group 2 with topical application of NaF solution is 2.85¡¾0.84 while that of Group 3 with NaF iontophoresis is 3.69¡¾0.23, which is statistically valid enough to indicate that the obstruction level of iontophoresis is higher than that of topical application (p£¼0.05). The obstruction level of Group 4 with APF gel application is 3.79¡¾0.42 while that of
Group 5 with neutral gel application is 3.28¡¾0.32, which is statistically valid enough to indicate that the obstruction level of
acid gel is higher than that of neutral gel application (p£¼0.05). The obstruction level of Group 6 with fluoride varnish is
3.92¡¾0.27, which is statistically valid enough to indicate that the obstruction level of Group 6 is higher than NaF solid application, iontophoresis and neutral gel application (p£¼0.05).
Conclusion: It is concluded that in desensitization treatment, fluoride varnish application, iontophoresis and APF gel topical application can be clinically useful among by various fluoride applications when it is evaluated in obstruction level.
